우리 랩에 있는 가이거 뮐러 계수기에는 칼링 케그(keg) 뚜껑이 달려있다. 방사선 측정기에다 맥주배럴 뚜껑을 달아놓는것이야 참 영국애들스러운 센스라고 치더라도, 도대체 펍에 있는 술창고에서 일하지 않으면 구하기도 쉽지 않은 케그 뚜껑을 어디서 주워다가 저기에 박아놓은것일까. 아니 애초에 저기에 맥주 뚜껑을 박아놓을 이유가 없지 않나.

아래 구인광고 글에 손무가 꽤나 예리한 덧글을 달았더랬다.

당연히 이미 한건 했습니다.




왼쪽은 그냥 모기에 노출된 사람이고, 다른 한 사람은 입과 코를 덮는 마스크를 착용, 이산화탄소를 다른 곳으로 뽑아 냈다. 보시다시피 확실히 마스크가 없는 쪽의 모기가 얼굴을 많이 물었다는것을 볼 수 있다. 다만 이산화탄소라는 직접적인 지표가 없더라도 다른 복합적인 방법으로 희생자를 찾아내 흡혈을 할 수 있는듯. 아직도 모기가 정확히 어떻게 희생자를 지목하는지, 그리고 왜 어떤 사람을 다른 사람들 보다 더 선호하는지에 대한 답은 나와있지 않다.


+)다만 실험실 내에서 키우는 모기들의 경우, 특정 동물의 피를 섭취할 경우 reproduction rate가 월등이 상승 하는것을 볼 수 있었다. 특히 인간의 피를 먹은 녀석들이 알을 아주 잘 까더라.

We are looking for volunteers willing to participate in a study regarding a possible new method for the control of malaria vectors. More than 300.000.000 cases and more than 1.000.000 millions deaths yearly, only in Africa. Those are the approximate malaria figures.

Current tools for malaria control include treatment of cases, presumptive treatment of apparently healthy individuals, prevention with bednets and insecticides. The appearance of resistant parasites and vectors threats to render all theses measures ineffective. Alternative and innovative methods are urgently needed to stop resistance spread and control the vectors.

Ivermectin is a drug that has been in use for the more than 25 years. It is an effective antihelminthic. It is also very effective for the control of onchocerciasis, in the context of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in Africa more than 530 million doses have been safely administered to almost 70 million individuals.

After it is taken orally, ivermectin appears in the blood and slowly disappears in the next 12-14 days. It effectively kills most ectoparasites including scabies and louse. Some small experiments have shown that mosquitoes fed on a human who has taken ivermectin in the previous 14 days die more rapidly than those fed on a naïve individual.

We think ivermectin may have a role in the control of malaria. In order to investigate this possibility, we need to demonstrate its effects on mosquitoes comparing the survival of mosquitoes fed on treated individuals with the survival of those fed on untreated persons.

The experiment involves being randomly allocated to received the usual dose of ivermectin orally or nothing. Volunteers will be asked to place a cup containing 20 healthy, laboratory breed (NB free of disease)(...예, 예 뭐 그러시겠지요) mosquitoes to their forearm for 10 minutes on day one after the randomization and again on day 14.

Mosquitoes will be kept for 14 days and the survival on both groups will be then assessed and compared.

A compensation of 25 pounds(!!!!!!) will be given to every participant at the end of the study.

Experimentation will begin the first week of July 2008.

The study has been aproved by the school's ethics committee.

학교 구인 광고 메일로는 이런게 날아오는 동네 입니다. 과연 기덕후들의 소굴답다. 어디 다른데는 인터뷰 한시간 해주면 20파운드 주던데 10분씩 2번 20마리의 모기에게 잔인하게 난도질 당하고 25파운드라니. 제법 훌륭하잖아. 돈에 미친 기덕후는 오늘도 임상실험에 자원합니다. 5만원은 어디 땅파면 나온답니까.


+)그건 그거고 ivermectin이 이나 벼룩에게 효과가 있는건 알았지만 사람에게 주입해 모기를 죽인다는 발상, 참 신선하지 않습니까. 인간을 움직이는 살충제로 삼는다, 아 머리 좋고 아이디어 번뜩이는 사람이 너무 많다.
